CLASSE Computing Outages: 12-Jul-2025 to 21-Jul-2025
From Saturday, 12-Jul-2025, to Monday, 21-Jul-2025, CLASSE computing services both onsite and offsite will be disrupted by a series of scheduled power outages due to electrical maintenance at Wilson Lab. Please note that, although Wilson Lab will regain power on Saturday, 19-Jul-2025, we do not expect to have most CLASSE-IT services restored until Monday, 21-Jul-2025. Additional recovery efforts might extend farther into the week.
This schedule may shift on short notice in case of inclement weather that makes it unsafe to perform the electrical maintenance. Any schedule adjustments will be communicated via the

Impact on Compute Farm
In preparation for the Wilson Lab power outages, most
CLASSE Compute Farm batch queues will be disabled two days beforehand, starting Saturday, 12-Jul-2025 at 8:00 AM and will not be fully restored until Monday, 21-Jul-2025, approximately 8:00 AM.
Please note that
interactive and
CHESS queues are excluded from this two-day pre-outage pause; jobs running in these queues will instead be terminated on Monday, 14-Jul-2025 at 12:00 noon, when the Compute Farm is shut down. From Monday, 14-Jul-2025 at 5:00 PM to Saturday, 19-Jul-2025 at 5:00 AM, interactive and CHESS queues will be running with reduced capacity.
Impact on General Computing
General CLASSE-IT services will be disrupted
twice during this period: first on Monday, 14-Jul-2025 at 12:00 noon (for approximately 4 hours) and again on Saturday, 19-Jul-2025 at 5:00 AM (for approximately 2 days). Please
save your work to samba (central filesystems) and
log out of your computer before this time.
We recommend leaving end-user computers powered on, to avoid needing manual reboots when power is restored.
During these outages, the following CLASSE services
will not be available from any location, onsite or offsite:
- Remote logins via ScreenConnect, NoMachine, etc.
- CLASSE VPN and other CLASSE networks
- Central filesystems, including Samba and Globus
- CLASSE web services: wiki, Indico, Timesheet, BeamPASS, GitLab, etc.
- AppsAnywhere
- Network license servers (Matlab, Autodesk Vault, Cadence, Mathematica, Ansys, etc.)
- Compute Farm
- Printing
However, central Cornell services
will be available, e.g. Cornell email, Teams, Box, Workday, Zoom, etc. The
CLASSE website,
CHESS website, and
CBB website will also be available.
After the Outages
Although we expect most central CLASSE-IT services to be restored by Monday, 21-Jul-2025 around 8:00 AM, individual end-user computers might need additional attention. If you have problems with your workstation or computing resources on Monday, please:
- First, try rebooting your computer, if possible.
- Then, submit a ServiceRequest if the problem remains.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see

The BeamPASS application receives bug fixes and new features on Tuesdays. When these updates are made, users will be logged out but should be able to login again within a few minutes. If you find BeamPASS is unavailable for longer than that, please submit a
ServiceRequest.
