CLASSE Computing Outages: 01-Dec-2025 to 05-Dec-2025

From Monday, 01-Dec-2025, to Friday, 05-Dec-2025, CLASSE computing services both onsite and offsite will be disrupted by a scheduled power outage on Wednesday, 03-Dec-2025, that will impact the Wilson Lab Server Room, W-221. Please note that, although Wilson Lab will regain power around 12:00 noon on Wednesday, 03-Dec-2025, we do not expect to have most CLASSE-IT services restored until Friday, 05-Dec-2025. Additional recovery efforts might extend farther into the weekend.

This schedule may shift on short notice, and any schedule adjustments will be communicated via the CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L mailing list -- please subscribe to receive urgent announcements from CLASSE-IT.

Below is a summary timeline, along with recommended actions for users and status of Compute Farm queues:

Impact on Compute Farm

In preparation for the Wilson Lab power outages, most CLASSE Compute Farm batch queues will be disabled two days beforehand, starting Monday, 01-Dec-2025 at 8:00 AM and will not be fully restored until Friday, 05-Dec-2025, approximately 8:00 AM.

Please note that interactive and CHESS queues are excluded from this two-day pre-outage pause; jobs running in these queues will instead be terminated on Wednesday, 03-Dec-2025, at 8:00 AM, when the Compute Farm is shut down.

Impact on General Computing

General CLASSE-IT services will be disrupted Wednesday, 03-Dec-2025, at 8:00 AM. Please save your work to samba (central filesystems) and log out of your computer before this time. We recommend powering off your computers at this time, or plan to reboot your computer when power is restored.

During these outages, the following CLASSE services will not be available from any location, onsite or offsite:

However, central Cornell services will be available, e.g. Cornell email, Teams, Box, Workday, Zoom, etc. The CLASSE website, CHESS website, and CBB website will also be available.

After the Outages

Although we expect most central CLASSE-IT services to be restored by Friday, 05-Dec-2025, around 8:00 AM, individual end-user computers might need additional attention. If you have problems with your workstation or computing resources on Friday, please:
  • First, try rebooting your computer, if possible.
  • Then, submit a ServiceRequest if the problem remains.

Network Disruptions: Tuesday, 18-Nov-2025 @ 10:00 AM

On Tuesday, 18-Nov-2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon, there will be brief 5-minute network interruptions on all CLASSE networks due to upgrades of CLASSE core networking equipment and firewalls. Connectivity to external sites will also be affected.

GitLab Update: Tuesday, 18-Nov-2025 @ 10:00 AM

On Tuesday, 18-Nov-2025, at 10:00 AM, the CLASSE GitLab will be unavailable for approximately one hour for a series of updates. Please submit a ServiceRequest if you have any questions or concerns.



General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.

The BeamPASS application receives bug fixes and new features on Tuesdays. When these updates are made, users will be logged out but should be able to login again within a few minutes. If you find BeamPASS is unavailable for longer than that, please submit a ServiceRequest.
