2025: The Year in Review

Happy holidays from CLASSE-IT. 2025 was another busy year for us. We commissioned a comprehensive upgrade of our central servers and storage, fortified and modernized our core network infrastructure, conducted an extensive cybersecurity review, and successfully recovered from two scheduled power outages. We finished updating to a new Linux operating system, and we started planning for our next Windows migration. Our web applications group developed and deployed a new stockroom inventory app while making significant improvements to existing apps like Timesheet and BeamPASS. At the same time, we provided day-to-day support to our community of over 1400 active users and collaborators, including 280 CLASSE personnel.

Some notable statistics from the past year include:
  • 2500 new ServiceRequest tickets submitted by over 400 different users, generating 23,000 emails.
  • 540,000 jobs submitted to the CLASSE Compute Farm by over 190 users, consuming over 180 CPU years of computer time.
  • 4.4 petabytes of raw storage commissioned.
  • 64,000 pages sent to our printers.
  • 390 terabytes of raw data collected by CHESS users.
  • 190 computers and servers deployed or upgraded.
  • 200 GitLab projects created or updated (out of 480 total) by CLASSE users.
  • 810 GitLab tickets (issues) resolved by the web applications group across 17 active projects.

Whether we are maintaining steady user operations or introducing new technological capabilities, the CLASSE-IT team is proud to be a part of all the research at the lab. We also rely on daily support from our colleagues across CLASSE; many thanks to everyone for your invaluable help and partnership. We wish you all a restful winter break, and see you in 2026!

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.

The BeamPASS application receives bug fixes and new features on Tuesdays. When these updates are made, users will be logged out but should be able to login again within a few minutes. If you find BeamPASS is unavailable for longer than that, please submit a ServiceRequest.
