From Wednesday, 05-Aug-2026, to Saturday, 08-Aug-2026, CLASSE computing services both onsite and offsite will be disrupted by a series of scheduled power outages due to electrical maintenance at Wilson Lab. Please note that, although Wilson Lab will regain power around 12:00 noon on Thursday, 06-Aug-2026, we do not expect to have most CLASSE-IT services restored until Saturday, 08-Aug-2026. Additional recovery efforts might extend farther into the weekend.

This schedule may shift on short notice, and any schedule adjustments will be communicated via the CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L mailing list -- please subscribe to receive urgent announcements from CLASSE-IT.

Impact on Compute Farm

On Wednesday, 05-Aug-2025, at 8:00 AM, most jobs running in the CLASSE Compute Farm will be terminated because of a scheduled power outage in the Wilson Lab East Module. Please ensure that any Compute Farm jobs submitted before then have enough time to complete. For the remainder of 05-Aug-2025, the CLASSE Compute Farm will be operating with significantly reduced capacity, with only a small number of nodes available. Therefore, jobs submitted on 05-Aug-2025 may experience delays in execution. The Compute Farm is expected to be fully restored by Saturday, 08-Aug-2026, approximately 8:00 AM.

Impact on General Computing

General CLASSE-IT services will be disrupted Thursday, 06-Aug-2026, at 6:00 AM. Please save your work to samba (central filesystems) and log out of your computer before this time. We recommend powering off your computers at this time, or plan to reboot your computer when power is restored.

During these outages, the following CLASSE services will not be available from any location, onsite or offsite:

However, central Cornell services will be available, e.g. Cornell email, Teams, Box, Workday, Zoom, etc. The CLASSE website, CHESS website, and CBB website will also be available.

After the Outages

Although we expect most central CLASSE-IT services to be restored by Saturday, 08-Aug-2026, around 8:00 AM, individual end-user computers might need additional attention. If you have problems with your workstation or computing resources on Friday, please:
  • First, try rebooting your computer, if possible.
  • Then, submit a ServiceRequest if the problem remains.

NoMachine Update: Tuesday, 21-Jul-2026 @ 8:00 AM

If you are a NoMachine user, at the end of Monday, 20-Jul-2026 (today), please save your work and log out of any NoMachine Virtual Desktops. On Tuesday, 21-Jul-2026, between at 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, all NoMachine servers will be updated to the latest release. When this update occurs, remote connections will be interrupted and all NoMachine Virtual Desktops will be deleted. Please submit a ServiceRequest with any questions or concerns.

Network Disruptions: Tuesday, 21-Jul-2026 @ 10:00 AM

On Tuesday, 21-Jul-2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon, there will be brief 5-minute network interruptions on all CLASSE networks due to upgrades of CLASSE core networking equipment and firewalls. Connectivity to external sites will also be affected.

GitLab Update: Tuesday, 21-Jul-2026 @ 10:00 AM

On Tuesday, 21-Jul-2026, at 10:00 AM, the CLASSE GitLab will be unavailable for approximately one hour for a series of updates. Please submit a ServiceRequest if you have any questions or concerns.

Conference Room PSB-301 AV Repair

The in-room microphone in PSB-301 is currently having trouble connecting to computers running Zoom, and when it does connect, the sound levels vary and often drop out. The CIT AV Support team is scheduled to perform detailed diagnostics of the hardware sometime this week. In the meantime, conference rooms PSB-308 and PSB-470 may be reserved for Zoom meetings. To reserve other locations in the PSB, please visit this link.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.

The BeamPASS application receives bug fixes and new features on Tuesdays. When these updates are made, users will be logged out but should be able to login again within a few minutes. If you find BeamPASS is unavailable for longer than that, please submit a ServiceRequest.
