Duo Enrollment Clinic: Wednesday, 05-Apr-2017

Starting 20-Apr-2017, IT@Cornell will require Two-Step Login to access financial and tax-related tasks in Workday. This action is being taken in response to a recent spate of costly NetID compromises. Two-Step Login helps protect your Cornell NetID against unauthorized use, and we strongly encourage you to enable it for all Cornell web services.

To assist members of CLASSE with Two-Step Login, we will be hosting our first enrollment clinic offered by IT@Cornell:
  • Date: Wednesday, 05-Apr-2017
  • Time: 11:00 AM
  • Place: Wilson Lab, 3rd Floor Commons
Please stop by to get started with Two-Step Login. We will schedule a second clinic in Newman Lab at a later date.

Welcome Change to Cornell-Visitor Wi-Fi Network, 02-Apr-2017

On Sunday, April 2, the Cornell-Visitor Wi-Fi network started to provide more access for visitors. The Cornell-Visitor network has been restricted to web access only. Starting Sunday, the visitor network will allow all protocols, meaning visitors will be able to use email applications such as Apple Mail, Outlook, and others. Most Cornell and CLASSE sites will also be available except for CUVPN and campus email servers. https://it.cornell.edu/news/change-coming-cornell-visitor-wifi-network/20170329

Zoom Training Sessions: Monday, 03-Apr-2017

On Monday, 03-Apr-2017, CIT will hold two free Zoom training sessions in Bailey Hall. Attend one or both to learn how easy it is to host and start a meeting using Zoom, and bring a laptop if you’d like to follow along within Zoom. In June 2017 WebEx will be retired and Zoom will become Cornell's free online web and video conferencing service for the university.

Autodesk upgrade: Monday, 17-Apr-2017

A major upgrade to our Autodesk software products will take place on Monday, April 17. As part of this transition, the Vault will be disabled on Friday, April 14 for migration to the new version. After the upgrade, Inventor, Vault Pro, CFD, and Multiphysics will be at version 2017 (currently 2015). More details will follow as the date approaches.

Data storage: Cornell Box vs CLASSE central storage

With the growing use of Cornell's Box service for data storage by members of CLASSE, we would like to publicize its differences from CLASSE central storage (a.k.a. samba).

Box is great for sharing files, whether or not your collaborators are affiliated with Cornell. Box's web interface is user-friendly, and viewing/editing permissions are easy to assign. However, as with files stored locally on your computers, files stored on Box are not backed up. Therefore, files that are permanently deleted from Box cannot be retrieved.

On the other hand, most filesystems on CLASSE central storage are backed up nightly. We keep the nightly backups for one month, and we also archive full monthly backups indefinitely. Therefore, we can easily restore files that were deleted yesterday or even ten years ago (as long as the files were on disk at the time of a backup). For this reason, we recommend that important files (especially experimental data) be stored on CLASSE central storage.

Note that we also provide a web interface to CLASSE central storage, known as Pydio.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
