Central Filesystem Maintenance: Tuesday, 11-Jun-2019 @ 11:00 AM

On Tuesday, 11-Jun-2019, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, several central Linux filesystems will be restarted to ensure optimum load balancing and availability. Samba access will be affected by rolling pauses for less than a minute each. Please submit a ServiceRequest with any questions or concerns.

Timesheet App Presentations: This Week

Please attend one of this week's two presentations on the new Timesheet app:
  • Wednesday, 12-Jun-2019 @ 1:00 PM in the Wilson Commons
  • Friday, 14-Jun-2019 @ 10:00 AM in Newman 311
The demonstration will include a walk-through of how to enter time and approve timesheets as a supervisor and a WBS approver. Bill Franklin will also be there to answer any accounting questions related to the WBS structure.

The Replicon application for tracking effort at the lab will be retired this summer and replaced with Timesheet. Timesheet is a web application developed by CLASSE-IT and the Business Office. Some groups have already transitioned over to Timesheet and we will continue asking others to make that transition incrementally. If you would like to be an "early adopter" of the new app, please contact Bill Franklin.
  • All hourly employees will use Timesheet exclusively starting June 20.
  • All salaried employees will use Timesheet exclusively starting July 1.
Introductory documentation is available at TimesheetApp.

Confidential Data Scanning at CLASSE

In April 2018, we released the CLASSE Policy on Confidential Information, which prohibits any long-term storage of confidential data on CLASSE computers. This policy applies to information that is under the custodianship of the university, not to one's own personal information. For Cornell purposes, confidential information currently comprises these pieces of data:
  • Social Security number
  • Credit card number
  • Driver's license number
  • Bank account number
  • Protected health information, as defined in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

In a continuing effort to improve the control of confidential data at CLASSE, and to comply with Cornell's Certified Desktop Security Policy, CLASSE-IT will be installing a scanning tool called Spirion on CLASSE-managed Windows and Mac computers. Many of you have used an older version of this tool (called Identity Finder) to perform manual confidential data scans of your computer's hard drives. Spirion automates this process by scanning hard drives and websites at regular intervals. As with Identity Finder, Spirion produces lists of files that may potentially contain confidential data. These lists are also logged on a central server operated by Cornell Information Technologies (CIT). In certain cases, filenames may be forwarded to CLASSE-IT for further investigation or remediation. For additional information regarding digital privacy at CLASSE, please see the CLASSE-IT Privacy Statement.

Initially, Spirion will be deployed to a pilot group of users who will be contacted by CLASSE-IT by the end of June 2019. Any further deployments will take place only after discussion and coordination with the affected users. If you have any concerns about this new security measure to address confidential data at CLASSE, please contact Katie Jacoby and Werner Sun.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
