CLASSE and CHESS firewall scans, 29-Jun-2017

On Thursday, 29-Jun-2017, at 1:30 PM, we will perform a routine vulnerability scan of the CLASSE and CHESS firewalls, which should take approximately one hour. We do not expect this scan to cause any major network disruptions, but some slight glitches might appear during this time. Please contact us with any concerns.

Central and Backed-up filesystems

CLASSE supports almost a petabyte of central RAID storage that can be accessed from Linux, Windows, and OS X using NFS or Samba. These servers reliably store our data and are protected against most hardware failures.

Some, but not all, of these file systems are backed up, so files can be recovered which were deleted or overwritten long ago, perhaps by accident. Other file systems are not backed up, so should be used for files that have already been backed up or can be regenerated in one way or another.

For a list of file systems available from Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows, including whether or not they are backed up, please see: https://www.classe.cornell.edu/private/computing/filesystems.html

For help determining where to store your data, requests for new file systems, or requests to backup existing file systems, please email service-classe@cornell.edu .

Two-Step Login will be required starting in July for staff NetID logins

During the month of July, Cornell will enroll all staff in Two-Step logins for all Cornell Web logins (except for email). This includes logins to Kronos. It does not include logins to CLASSE Web services. For example, logins to Replicon and private Wiki pages will not change. This compulsory change will not affect students, faculty, and other academic classifications, but their voluntary enrollment is strongly encouraged.

The exact date of this enrollment will be different for different people. We have no way to predict when it will happen for any specific individual. CIT will be notifying people starting on June 28th. CIT recommends that you make this change voluntarily so they don't have to force it on you unexpectedly. To voluntarily enroll, go to the Web page https://it.cornell.edu/twostep then select "Manage Your Two-Step Login", login, select "Expand Where You Use Two-Step Login" and then click on "Opt-In". It will verify your choice by using the Two-Step login process. About 32 percent of staff are already using Two-Step logins for all of their NetID transactions.

Unfortunately, this has to happen because of intensified attacks on Cornell NetID computer accounts. About 200 accounts are compromised every week.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
