Adobe Flash Deprecation: Test Your Websites

As previously announced, we will be uninstalling Adobe Flash from CLASSE-managed computers during the month of December 2020 because of Adobe's hard deadline for the end of Flash support on 31-Dec-2020. After this date, Adobe will not allow any websites or browser-based tools with Flash content to be loaded in any browser.

Therefore, as soon as possible, please test whether the sites or tools that you rely on will work without Flash. Simply launch your site or tool in Vivaldi (which has never come with Flash support at CLASSE), and if you have no problems, then no action is required. If your site or tool does not work with Vivaldi, then please submit a ServiceRequest.

Zoombombing Response and Prevention

Zoombombing is a highly disruptive practice that can be traumatic for those involved. If you are the host of a meeting that is being Zoombombed, you can immediately remove the disruptive participant from your meeting (go to Participants - click on name - More - Remove). Participants that are removed will not be able to rejoin unless explicitly allowed.

To prevent further disruption, possible next steps include:
  • Lock the meeting, so that no new participants can join (Participants - More - Lock Meeting).
  • Enable the waiting room, so that new participants must be admitted by the host (Participants - More - Enable Waiting Room).
  • End the meeting for all participants.

Zoombombing can be prevented by following these tips from IT@Cornell. In addition, we recommend that Zoom meeting links not be published on public websites. If you must publish a link, please remove the encrypted password from the URL ("?pwd=xxxxx", where xxxxx is a random-looking string of characters) and provide the password to approved meeting participants separately.

Printing at Newman Lab

Two weeks ago, the black-and-white printer in 134 Newman Lab (N134_XRX_5550) reached its end of life and was removed. As a replacement, please use the color printer in room 123 (N123_XRX_7800), which supports both 8.5x11 and 11x17 formats. For a complete list of CLASSE printers, see PrinterList.

Web Browsers for CULearn Courses

Recently, Cornell introduced several required staff trainings through CULearn. In our testing, these courses work properly with the two browsers supported by CLASSE-IT — Vivaldi and Firefox — but with the following caveats:
  • You may need to allow popups (see above links for instructions).
  • If a launch button does not appear, click the “view details” button.
  • You may ignore or dismiss the message that says "Your browser does not meet the minimum requirements for Canvas."; you will be able to complete the training anyway.
  • Be patient; sometimes, the training takes a long time to load.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
