Printing at CLASSE

Because of recent security concerns around networked printing, we will be introducing a new method for printing on CLASSE-managed Windows computers. PrinterLogic is a cloud-based system provided by CIT that will replace the old CUPS system on Windows. Over the next few weeks, we will provide more details about the upcoming transition to PrinterLogic, which will be transparent for CLASSE users, except for minor changes to printer queue names. However, starting tomorrow, Tuesday, 05-Oct-2021, Windows users will see a new PrinterLogic icon in the system tray.

As a reminder, a comprehensive list of available CLASSE printers (including their locations and capabilities) is available here. CLASSE-IT continually monitors printers and user requirements, and we are planning to revisit the quantity and locations of CLASSE printers after the upcoming office moves are complete.

New CLASSE VPN: Pritunl

In preparation for the eventual deprecation of the legacy CLASSE OpenVPN service, we would like to encourage all CLASSE personnel to begin using our new VPN, known as Pritunl. Instructions for using Pritunl from CLASSE-managed and personal computers are available at ClasseVPN. For enhanced security, our Pritunl deployment includes two-factor authentication via CLASSE Duo (see below).

CLASSE Duo: Two-Factor Authentication

In light of the increased threat posed by ransomware and account compromises, CLASSE is adopting the use of Duo two-factor authentication for enhanced security of web services and remote logins. CLASSE Duo operates very similarly to Cornell's Duo service, although a separate CLASSE registration is required. To enroll in CLASSE Duo, please see these instructions for our web-based management portal. CLASSE Duo is currently required for the new VPN (Pritunl), and we plan to enable it for additional services in the future. If you have any questions or concerns about CLASSE Duo, please submit a ServiceRequest.

CULearn and Vivaldi: Enabling Pop-Up Windows

The Vivaldi web browser is compatible with CULearn, even though it is not explicitly listed as a supported browser (Vivaldi and Chrome share the same Chromium codebase). In order to launch CULearn trainings in Vivaldi, please follow these instructions for enabling pop-up windows on the CULearn site. Also, we have received reports of the CULearn server being overloaded with high demand, so if you find that a CULearn training fails to launch, please wait until later in the day and try again.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
