Firefox, Java and Flash updates for Windows

The LEPP computer group will be pushing updates to Firefox, Java and Flash beginning on Wednesday, April 6th, 2011, at 3AM. You will be given a 5 minute notice to close out Firefox before the updates begin. It will close Firefox automatically after 5 minutes. You will then be notified as soon as the updates are complete and you can re-start Firefox. All three programs will be updated at the same time.

Windows 7 SP1: Logout when you go home!

Windows 7 users should please logout before going home Friday (or Sunday) evening, April 8th (or 10th). Do NOT turn your computer off. If you do, the computer will be unusable for about an hour when it is turned on again while patches are applied.

LEPP will be applying the SP1 update to Windows 7 computers beginning early Monday morning, April 11th, 2011. It is scheduled to be applied during the standard install and reboot times for the computers. General use computers will apply the Service Pack on Monday at 3 AM. The update is expected to take around 1 hour to complete, with at least one reboot. The reboots will cause open programs to be terminated, possibly losing or corrupting their output files. If you've already logged out, you will not have this problem.

If you have a LEPP-managed Windows 7 laptop and do not leave it powered-on and connected to the LEPP network, the install may begin on Monday morning when you turn it on, causing a very long wait before the computer will be usable. The LEPP computer group will be trying to contact the users of the laptops which this will affect to make sure their computers are connected and powered on.

Subversion Revision Control System

On all LEPP Linux systems, we are using the latest Subversion (SVN) 1.6.16 client. On Windows, this corresponds to TortoiseSVN 1.6.15 (which is built against Subversion 1.6.16).

For improved functionality, the accelerator group has also been testing the Subversion 1.6.16 server. Announcements and documentation will be sent when the switchover date has been scheduled.

Faculty Lunch presentation: Data Cleanup

Representatives from the CCMR and LEPP computer groups will be providing information about the University's Data Cleanup program at the Physics Faculty Lunch on Monday, April 11.

Exchange Calendar Training

The Computer Group is offering CLASSE-focussed on-site training for Exchange calendaring on:
  • Monday, April 18, 2011, from 2 to 3 PM in the LEPP Trailer Conference Room (LT101)
  • Tuesday, April 19, 2011, from 2 to 3 PM in Newman 311
Training will include:
  • some background
  • a demonstration of how to schedule meetings in Wilson, Newman or PSB
  • some time at the end for Q&A

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
