CLASSE Managed Windows Computers Firefox Update

We will be updating Firefox to 24.4.0ESR, Flash to 13, and Java to 7u55 during our normal updates tonight.

Security scans of the Protected Subnet (LNS Protected)

Because computers running Windows XP (and older operating systems) pose a new security risk to CLASSE computing, we are attempting to discover such computers by conducting security scans of the Protected Subnet (aka "LNS Protected"). For now, the scans will originate from the computer named MR51 at IP address 192.168.215.51. If your system is a CLASSE managed computer, or if your OS is up to date, these scans will have little or no impact on performance. Please submit a ServiceRequest with any concerns you may have.

Our first scans began last week. For those of you who noticed and submitted a ticket - Good Job! You are using a managed system and / or have appropriate security software installed. Thank you for taking computer security seriously!

Pydio: Offsite access to Samba files

Up until now, users not connected to a CLASSE network have needed our VPN to access files stored on a CLASSE Samba network share. This includes access from RedRover. We now are happy to announce the launch of Pydio -- a web based tool for remote file access that does not require a VPN connection. Just drag and drop in the browser window. See https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/Obsolete/PydioUser for more details. Any feedback would be appreciated.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
