REMINDER: CLASSE-focussed tutorial and Q&A sessions for Exchange Calendaring

The LEPP Computer Group is offering CLASSE-focussed tutorial and Q&A sessions for Exchange Calendaring
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM, Tuesday 26 April 2011 in the LEPP Trailer Conference Room
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM, Wednesday 27 April 2011 in Newman 311

Windows 7 SP1

Reminder: Windows 7 SP1 will start installing at 3AM Tuesday (tomorrow) morning. Windows 7 PCs will reboot several times to complete the install. Please leave Laptops powered on, plugged into AC power with the screen up, and connected to the LEPP network overnight Monday evening so you are not inconvenienced Tuesday morning. The SP1 update takes at least a half-hour to apply.

Windows 7 will get Internet Explorer 9

The LEPP Computer Group still strongly recommends and supports using Firefox for browsing. This update does not change that. However, some internal Cornell websites still require Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 9 will be installed as part of the normal Win7 updates. This is primarily a security and performance update, but IE9's user interface is rather different. In particular, several header menu lines are hidden. To turn them back on, Right-Mouse-Button click in IE9's top area and use the popup menu to select the ones you want.

We do not expect that IE9 will affect your access to any websites, but please submit a service request if you encounter any issues.

CLASSE Domain Computers: Update schedule

Reminder: We have changed the update schedule for computers in the CLASSE domain. Starting this week, updates take place on Tuesday mornings at 3AM for all general use workstations. This change does not affect control system computers.

CLASSE Domain Computers: Missing scheduled updates will cause delays

CLASSE domain member computers which miss a scheduled update will apply the update after they turn back on. For instance, if you have a laptop and take it home on Monday night so that it misses the Tuesday morning 3AM update, when you turn it on Tuesday morning, it will apply the update then. If it needs to reboot, it will do so to complete the update. Normally, this will take less than 15 minutes. If we anticipate a longer update time such as for the SP1 install described above, we will notify you via the Newsletter.

Adobe Flash vulnerability

There is an actively exploited Adobe Flash vulnerability. The computer group has pushed updates to Windows computers. Please see our network status page for more information.

Printing and WinApp will be down for about 20 minutes Tuesday Morning, April 26, 2011 (Tomorrow)

We need to update the VM host LNX84 which runs the two services listed. To do so we need to reboot the host, which will cause a short outage for lab Printing and WinApp applications. We expect it to be between 10:30 - 11 AM. We apologize for the short notice.

Conference Room Equipment updates

The Windows Projection PC was removed from Newman 233 some time ago; it has been designated for recycling
The Windows Projection PC, Polycom ViewStation and Polycom SoundStation in Newman 311 will be removed this week and put into storage.
The Windows Projection PC in LT101 (aka LEPP Trailer Conference Room) will be removed this week and put into storage.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
