CLASSE Wiki Server Upgrade, May 27

On Monday, May 27, the CLASSE Wiki server will be upgraded to new software and hardware. In addition, the wiki server will be reconfigured to use CLASSE credentials for authentication and authorization. This means that you will login using your CLASSE username and password, and that access control lists (ACL's) will use central CLASSE groups instead of wiki groups.

This upgrade will affect all wiki's currently available from wiki.classe.cornell.edu and wiki.lepp.cornell.edu. For example, please see https://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/ClasseWikis.

When the upgrade is complete, all general CLASSE wikis, including the CLASSE Safety Handbook, will be available from wiki.classe.cornell.edu. Redirects will be created to automatically redirect users from old URL's to new.

As this will be a significant reconfiguration, please expect wiki.classe.cornell.edu to be unavailable periodically from 12pm-8pm on Monday, May 27. In order to minimize the disruption, the CLASSE Computer Group chose to implement this upgrade on the holiday.

Brief Potential Network Outage, May 28

To improve the reliability and performance of our LNS Protected (laptop) subnet, we are planning a very brief, hopefully unnoticeable, network outage on May 28 at 10:00 am. LNS Protected will be moved to a new router, and only this subnet will be affected. Network traffic on LNS Protected should only be interrupted for a few seconds during the move, but please be prepared for a slightly longer outage if necessary.

Update: we have rescheduled this outage for 1:00 pm, in order to avoid disruption of meetings occurring during the morning.

CLASSE Safety Handbook Authentication

On Tuesday, April 16, the CLASSE Safety Handbook was reconfigured to authenticate using CLASSE credentials instead of LEPP credentials. You must login to the CLASSE Safety Handbook using the same username and password that you use to login to the CLASSE VPN, CLASSE Windows computers, etc.

This does not affect anyone who is accessing the safety handbook from any CLASSE Network or after logging into the CLASSE VPN. This only affects users who try to access Private (restricted) safety handbook pages from outside the Lab, including from Red Rover.

This change also does not affect access to the CLASSE Training Database. A significant amount of work is needed to upgrade the training database to use CLASSE authentication. Until this work is complete, you must still login to the training database using your LEPP Unix userid and LEPP Unix Network password.

For help changing or resetting your CLASSE password or LEPP Network password, please email service-classe@cornell.edu or view the following documentation: https://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/UserAccountsAndPasswords

Information about the migration to CLASSE Authentication for all CLASSE Services, as well as suggestions for minimizing the disruption from this gradual and ongoing process, is available at http://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/Obsolete/CLASSESinglePassword .

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
