Brief network outage at 10am on Tuesday, November 10th

At 10am on Tuesday, 11/10, there will be a brief network glitch (pause or outage) when we update the firmware on several CLASSE and CHESS network switches. This glitch might last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, and is required to address bugs that resulted in switch failures Wednesday and Thursday afternoon (11/4 and 11/5).

Don't upgrade to MacOS El Capitan or Windows 10

Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) recommends all users of Cornell-owned computers do not upgrade their systems to the latest ve rsions of Mac and Windows operating systems until thorough testing for compatibility with centrally supported services is complete. Find out why at http://itnews.cornell.edu/ZJY

For the same reasons, the CLASSE IT group also recommends not upgrading personally owned computers.

Do NOT "Update Your CORNELL UNIVERSITY Webmail" -- it's a scam.

Many people recently received a notice with the subject "Update Your CORNELL UNIVERSITY Webmail". Don't. That mesa\ge is a scam, also known as a "phishing attempt". The senders are attempting to get your NetID and password so they can use your Cornell account and your personal information for their own purposes -- for spamming others and to steal your identity.

If you clicked on the link in that message, please change your NetID's password immediately and contact the CIT helpdesk. Their contact information is available at http://www.it.cornell.edu/support/

A list of known fradulent email messages, including that one, is available at http://www.it.cornell.edu/security/phishbowl.cfm A video showing how to detect fraudlent email messages is available at http://www.it.cornell.edu/customcf/iws_vid_gallery/view.cfm?vid=23

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
