Brief network outage, Tue Nov 12 @ 9 AM

There will be a brief network outage starting at 9am, Tuesday, November 12, 2013. We expect the outage to be less than 10 minutes but it could be longer if we encounter problems.

This outage will affect all of LEPP's network services, including wired network connectivity for Newman Lab, the Physical Sciences Building and Wilson Lab. We don't expect it to directly impact the CESR, ERL and SRF control systems' networks, but connections between LEPP and CHESS and between LEPP and the outside world will go down. Connections between CHESS and the outside world will be unaffected.

The central LEPP router will be upgraded from a Cisco router to a Vyatta router which will provide higher throughput and additional functionality. Among other things, it will improve LEPP's connection to the campus backbone from 100 Megabits/sec to 1 Gigabit/sec.

Exchange (Office 365) Upgrade during the first week of December

Microsoft has announced the timing for the upgrade of Cornell's instance of Office 365, our email/calendaring system for faculty and staff. They have informed us that our upgrade will begin in approximately 4 weeks, sometime in the first week of December. We will know the exact start date and time of the upgrade two weeks before it begins. At the moment, it is expected to start the evening of December 4th and will take about 8 days.

Windows XP - End of Support

Microsoft is stopping support of Windows XP in April of 2014. Cornell removed support for Windows XP last year. Any Windows XP computers must be retired, upgraded or replaced by March of 2014. We will be disabling network access of Windows XP computers around that time. The CLASSE Computer Group is contacting everyone we have records of using Windows XP. If you are running Windows XP please make immediate plans, deciding whether that computer is still necessary and how to proceed without running Windows XP.

LNSNTCAD end of life

As we phase out Windows XP, LNSNTCAD - the old NT4 windows domain is being turned off on December 16th. It is now superseded by CLASSE, the new Windows Active Directory domain. If you have an XP system that is joined to LNSNTCAD we will be switching you to CLASSE before that date. Remember to keep your important files in your user area on \\samba\user\%your_user_id%.

Replicon Web TimeSheet server upgrade- Thursday, November 14th @2:00 PM

The CLASSE Replicon Web TimeSheet server will be upgraded on Thursday at 2:00 PM, so that it will function with newer web browsers. Replicon will be unavailable for at least 1 hour. Please save your Replicon entries by 2:00 PM so the edits are not lost during the transition to the new server!

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
