Windows Office 2010 upgrade: substantial disruption starting Monday evening, October 17

You must close all Windows Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint) before 4:30 PM on Monday, October 17th, You do not have to log out, and will be able to read and write mail by using "Outlook Web App" at https://exchange.cornell.edu/

All LEPP Windows computers will be updated to Office 2010 on Monday, October 17th starting at 4:30 PM. This update is supposed to resolve most of the e-mail problems seen with Outlook 2007. Unfortunately, Outlook cannot be updated by itself. The update won't fix all of the mail problems, either. If you have problems with Outlook after Monday. please use "Outlook Web App" at https://exchange.cornell.edu/ and notify both the CIT helpdesk and LEPP's computer group. See below for details.

Most Office 2010 programs will look different after the update, since they all use the new Ribbon interface. Cornell provides both Web-based and in-classroom training for Office 2010. See http://www.cit.cornell.edu/training/office2010.cfm The LEPP computer group also has an introductory book that you can borrow: Microsoft Windows 7 & Office 2010 for Dummies (portable edition) It's available from various bookstores if you want to get your own copy.

Exchange Email Problems

CIT is still in the process of moving email accounts from the old Exchange 2007 servers to the new Exchange 2010 servers. They expect the migration to be finished by the end of this month (October 2011)

MANY people have reported problems with Exchange Email during this transition time. The most common problem reported (by far) is that Outlook repeatedly prompts for your password.

To make progress toward the solution for this most recent set of problems, the LEPP computer group will be updating all copies of Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2010 on the evening of October 17, 2011.

If you have problems reading or sending your email, it is IMPORTANT that you do the following three things:
  1. Try using Outlook Web App at https://exchange.cornell.edu/ to send and read email
  2. Notify the CIT help desk about the problem, including whether or not OWA works for you
  3. Notify the LEPP computer group

Please do NOT use Cc: to send notices to both groups at the same time. This usually causes a mail-loop as the two trouble ticketing systems start talking to one another, causing many more problems.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
