Notes

  • Stay away from Nvidia Quadro 420 video cards. Note that Dell sells this card. On Linux they install the vesa driver and you get "wimpy video". The Nvidia graphics driver installs but never finds any "screens".
  • Stay away from Nvidia GeForce 310 video cards. Note that HP sells this card. On Windows with HP driver, get black screen / no display. On Linux the same with driver.

Motherboards

Stay away from Nvidia chipset based motherboards.

Installation Instructions for specific hardware

Specialized Network Hardware

Moxa NPort 5100 Series

Configuration for Bob Meller's VMECrate use

  1. Get name and IP address.
  2. Log in to web interface at the IP address. (Default is no password, and we should not configure a password).
  3. Go to Network Settings in the left hand pane.
  4. Statically set the network configuration.
  5. Go to Serial Settings -> Port 1 in the left hand pane.
  6. Set the following settings:
    • Baud Rate = 9600
    • Data Bits = 8
    • Stop Bits = 1
    • Parity = None
    • Flow Control = XON/XOFF
    • FIFO = Enable
  7. Click Submit.
  8. Click on Operating Settings -> Port 1 in left hand pane.
  9. Set Operation Mode = Reverse Telnet Mode.
  10. Click on Save / Restart in the left hand pane.
  11. Click on Submit.
