Matlab 2013a push to CLASSE managed Windows computers - Monday, July 22, 2013

Windows computers currently running Matlab 2010a will receive Matlab 2013a during normal updates next Monday night. Matlab 2010a will still be available for a while, but you should start using the new version and features right away unless there is a compatibility issue. If you are not controlling hardware or interfacing with Labview etc on Windows desktops or lab restricted Laptops (Laptops that are not to leave the lab), we will be reviewing if Matlab is necessary to be maintained on those computers. We are encouraging everyone to use Matlab on Linux if possible.

Use Matlab on Linux

Most calculations can be done remotely, either interactively or as batch jobs, on Linux farm nodes via our Grid Engine: https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/GridEngine This can provide better performance than most desktop computers and would be using dedicated compute nodes.

Scientific Linux 6.4 Update - Tuesday, July 23

Starting Tuesday morning July 23rd, all managed CLASSE Scientific Linux 6 systems will be upgraded to SL6.4. This update should be transparent for most users. For the SL6.4 release notes and additional information on this update, please see http://www.scientificlinux.org/distributions/6x/6.4/ .

lnx6212 is a general-purpose system available for testing SL6.4.

Power Outage at Wilson Lab - Saturday, August 3

  • Wilson Lab will be without power from 8AM until 11AM on Saturday, August 3rd. Computers will be unavailable starting Friday evening, probably until Monday. More details will follow later.

Computer Group Away Schedule and Call List

The CLASSE Computer Group is on-call and available for any CLASSE IT related emergencies. During off-hours, the CLASSE IT group can be contacted by submitting a ServiceRequest. In emergencies where a ServiceRequest is not possible, contact information for the computer group is available at https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/Private/CallList . This list is posted in the CLASSE Operations office and the CESR Control Room.

In addition, the Computer Group away schedule is visible by any CLASSE personnel at https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/CmpGrp/Obsolete/HelmkeAwaySchedule . Please submit a ServiceRequest if you would like help setting up a comparable away schedule for your project or group.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
