Network Filesystems

To ensure your data is secure and available, CLASSE maintains several terabytes of centrally maintained, redundant storage. An automatically generated list of file systems that are available from Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X is now available at:

https://www.classe.cornell.edu/private/computing/samba.html

For more information on data storage at CLASSE, Please see DataStewardship.

Videoconferencing Systems: planning for the future

We are contemplating reducing the number of Polycom systems in Wilson and Newman Labs due to their high cost of maintenance and their inability to work with other collaborative communication systems (WebEx, Skype, etc). We expect the two Polycom systems in the Physical Sciences Building to remain, but we may continue a maintenance contract for one of them.

You can help us in our planning by letting us know if you have ever used a Polycom system, what you've used one for, how often you've used one, if you'll need to use one in the future, and where you expect to find one.

Please direct comments, questions, suggestions to service-classe@cornell.edu

Expanded Newman and PSB Office Hours

We are adding one hour to each of the Newman and PSB Office Hours, Office Hours are now:

Mondays 2 PM - 4 PM PSB 314
Wednesdays 2 PM - 4 PM Newman 120
and as needed, by appointment

IT Group Field Tests WebEx

The IT group field-tested an impromptu webex meeting involving video from an offsite collaborator's phone (using cellular) and audio and chat between multiple onsite IT staff. Please see the Wiki page WebEx for more on Cornell and CLASSE's most supported and versatile remote collaboration tool.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
