CESR Control System down starting at 9am Tuesday, August 9th.

The CESR Control System will be down on Tuesday August 9th. Starting at 9am, all CESR VMS and Linux systems will be unavailable. We hope to have everything back up by 3:00pm, and an announcement will be made when this maintenance is complete. CESR systems will not have monitoring or alarms during this period. Please make sure your systems are in a safe state by Tuesday morning and verify recovery of monitoring Tuesday afternoon.

When this maintenance is complete the main CESR control system disk, lnx180c, will be retired. The disk will be replaced with a high-throughput, high-availability device. The CESR Online filesystem will be served from cesronl, Control home directories will be served by cesrhome, and the CESR NTP (time) server will be known as "cesrtime." In summary:
  • /nfs/cesr/online will be served by cesronl:/gfs/cesr/online
  • /nfs/cesr/online will be available as \\cesronl\online from Windows systems on the CESR Private subnet
  • the CESR Control home directories will be served by cesrhome:/gfs/cesr/homes
  • The CESR NTP server will be "cesrtime"
    • "cesrtime" will use lnx180c's current IP addresses.
    • "lnx180c" will be made a CNAME for cesrtime

E-Mail changes

Exchange 2010

CIT is in the process of upgrading Cornell's central e-mail service from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010.
  • About 1500 Mac Mail users were migrated to Exchange 2010 this past weekend. Problems should be reported to the CIT helpdesk at helpdesk@cornell.edu or 607-255-8990.
  • A new webmail login interface called Outlook Web App is now at http://exchange.cornell.edu/ People whose accounts have been moved to Exchange 2010 will see an enhanced mail and calendar interface. Everyone else will see only a new login interface.
  • Their current plan is to finish moving everyone from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 in September.

Office 2010

As part of the E-mail upgrade process, LEPP will be deploying Office 2010 to provide the new Outlook mail client on Windows. The main change in Office is that the unified "Ribbon interface" is used by all of its applications, including Outlook.

  1. We will be announcing the date and time for the upgrade in the next few weeks.
  2. Your Windows computer's Office software will be upgraded automatically.
  3. Your e-mail and calendar entries will be moved automatically from the Outlook 2007 mail reader to the Outlook 2010 mail reader. This is separate from Cornell's Exchange migration.
  4. We are disabling Word Macros by default again in this deployment. For people who have Autodesk Inventor or Adobe Acrobat products, we have identified new workarounds to prevent the constant errors on trying to open Word. One of these workarounds will be included in the deployment.
  5. Cornell provides Skillsoft training for Office 2010. There is a book available with some quick pointers we can loan to people who would prefer it to Skillsoft. CIT also has periodic trainings on Office, please talk to your supervisor if you think you need to attend one.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
