Wilson Lab Color Printer - w229_ibm_1567

  • On Thursday afternoon (Mar. 17th) we hope to move the Wilson lab color printer from the lns61 print server to the new cups print server. This change should be transparent for desktop computing users. For laptop users, you will need to change your print server from lns61.lns.cornell.edu to cups.lns.cornell.edu. If you experience any problems printing to the color printer after this change, please send email to service-lepp@cornell.edu.

Scientific Linux 6

Scientific Linux 6 was officially released on March 3. The LEPP Computer Group will be evaluating SL6, but as our Linux deployment is largely dependent on compatibility with our collaborators, there are currently no plans to begin deploying SL6.

Announcements of urgent computing issues: a mailing list

CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L@cornell.edu is a new mailing list. You can subscribe to it to receive announcements of urgent computing issues -- e.g. services down because of power outages or hardware failures.

Instructions for subscribing to the list are available at https://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/ClasseNews

Enabling and disabling Network interfaces

Sometimes at LEPP you have to switch your laptop computer between wired and wireless network interfaces. Connecting to both types of networks at the same time won't work correctly until you turn one of them off. There are two primary examples of this at LEPP: in the PSB when you need to switch from Red Rover wireless to LEPP wired in order to print, and in Wilson or Newman Labs when the "LNS Protected" wireless connection isn't working well.

Instructions for switching between Wired and Wireless interfaces are available at https://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/NetXfcEnableDisable

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
