Today's topics:

Windows Inventory and deployment agent upgrade

We will be converting from our legacy OCSNG Agent on Windows XP x32 and Fusion Inventory 1.8 on Windows 7 to the latest Fusion Inventory 2.2 agent pointing at a Fusion Inventory server. Expected user impact is minimal, though we will be contacting individuals directly for whom the push fails, in order to schedule manual maintenance of their computers to repair any issues and ensure the required update is completed.

If your computer is running Windows XP x64, you should begin planning now for it to be migrated to Windows 7 in the near future. Questions should be addressed to the LCG in a service request.

Windows Default PDF viewer changing

In the next week we will be pushing a new PDF reader, PDF-X-Change viewer to all LEPP managed Windows PCs.

Adobe Reader has many security, usability and stability issues. We've been doing our best to keep it working, but the support costs and lost productivity is high. For most LEPP users, any PDF viewer works fine for viewing PDFs and filling out forms. Users on Mac and Linux already do not use Adobe Reader by default.

What does this mean to existing Windows Users?
  1. You should start using PDF-X-Change Viewer once it is deployed, however it will not automatically become your default PDF viewing tool.
  2. There will be another Newsletter Notice when we schedule the removal of Adobe Reader. Once it has been removed, you will need to use PDF-X-Change Viewer to view PDFs.
  3. This does not affect any licensed copies of Adobe Acrobat, only the free reader program.

Note: The full Adobe Acrobat remains accessible for all CLASSE users from our WinApp server here: https://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/AccessingWinApp

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
