LNX201 upgrade Tuesday October 15th at 10AM-Noon.

LNX201 will be unavilable from 10AM to Noon on Tuesday October 15th while we upgrade the hardware and configure CLASSE authentication. This means that if you do not already have a valid CLASSE or LNS Kerberos ticket, you will need to enter your CLASSE username and password to login to lnx201. The help avoid any confusion, all Linux systems will be updated in the following weeks to explicitly notify you of which credentials to use when logging in.

Most CLASSE Linux systems still default to the LNS kerberos domain, and a lab-wide migration is not planned until the next extended down. If you have not already done so, we would like to again encourage everyone to set their CLASSE, LNS Interactive, and LNS Network passwords to the same value. This will simplify your access to all CLASSE resources and negate any impact from moving individual systems and services between CLASSE and LNS. For more information, please see CLASSESinglePassword (https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/Obsolete/CLASSESinglePassword). Please email service-classe@cornell.edu if you would like any assistance testing or changing any of your CLASSE passwords.

Routine maintenance for laptops

If you have a CLASSE-managed Windows laptop that is infrequently used, please turn it on once per week and connect it to the LNS Protected network, so that it can receive operating system updates and security patches. This weekly maintenance will prevent delays that can otherwise occur, if the laptop is disconnected from LNS Protected for an extended period of time.

We also recommend that CLASSE-managed Windows laptops be serviced every six months by the IT group. Please open a ServiceRequest to schedule an appointment, and please allow several days for the maintenance.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
