AlmaLinux 9
Scientific Linux 7 (SL7) will reach its end-of-life on June 30, 2024, and will no longer receive updates after that date.
CLASSE-IT recommends and is supporting AlmaLinux 9, a rebuild of RedHat Enterprise Linux 9 (EL9), as a successor to Scientific Linux 7.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Where possible, CLASSE-IT will begin installing
AlmaLinux 9 on new deployments. A focused effort to upgrade existing SL7 servers and workstations will begin during the 2024 summer down.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
lnx209.classe.cornell.edu is a CLASSE
AlmaLinux 9 deployment ready for use. Please consider switching from lnx201 (SL7) to lnx209 as a general-purpose login node.
If you would like your CLASSE managed computers upgraded to
AlmaLinux 9, please submit a
ServiceRequest. If you manage your own linux computer, we highly recommend upgrading to
AlmaLinux 9.
Please note that software built on
AlmaLinux 9 may not run on SL7, while in most cases code built on SL7 will (or can) run on
AlmaLinux 9. When working on a CLASSE
AlmaLinux 9 computer, such as lnx209.classe.cornell.edu, please submit a
ServiceRequest if you find any missing software or are unable to run any existing software.
The Zoom desktop client stopped working for Scientific Linux 7 starting Nov. 4, 2023. Zoom on a web browser continues to work after this date.
