Home Disk Failure - October 13, 2011

If you use a desktop Linux computer and cannot access your home disk area, please reboot your computer. Files created or updated in home directories between 4am and 7:30pm Thursday, October 13 have been lost.
LEPP's Unix and Linux home disk server failed Thursday, October 13, at about 4:35 PM. Its disks are not recoverable.
The Unix/Linux home disk service has been moved temporarily to the system which had been doing daily backups. Unfortunately, the most recent backup was done at about 4 AM on Thursday. All changes to home disk files made during the day on Thursday have been lost.
Any computer which had files open on the home disk server at the time it failed will have to be rebooted to gain access to the new disk server. This includes most desktop Linux comptuers and all batch systems.
Central servers which use the home disk were recovered Thursday evening. All other general-use systems, including all linux farm nodes, were repaired on Friday.
CESR and ERL control systems' home directories are not on the central home disks and are not directly affected.

A planned upgrade for home disk service has been under development but is not yet ready.The system temporarily being used is significantly less capable than the previous server. Announcements will be made once a plan is in place for moving the home disks to their final long-term destination.
