Image Gallery Evaluation

EDMS (Invenio)

CLASSE's Electronic Document Management System uses the Invenio software developed by CERN. We chose Invenio for our document management system because it could also handle figures. As there seems to be some overlap between the two, it would seem ideal to be able to use the same system for both figures and image galleries. https://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/LEPPFigureArchive

Pro

  1. Already in use for documents and (potentially) figures
  2. enterprise class security, written in python
  3. used by major labs and HEP experiments (CERN, ILC, etc.)
  4. Ability to have images in multiple collections (for example, both public and private).
  5. highly customizable metadata, access controls, etc. (some by expert)

Con

  1. No integrated ability to upload a zip file.
  2. Modifications must be done to records individually (no integrated "bulk modification")
  3. Customizations require computer group intervention.
  4. less user friendly. some actions (such as moving an image to a new collection) may require help from expert.

Gallery2

Pro

  1. User friendly web-based interface
  2. ability for users to upload own images

Con

  1. unable to have a single image appear in multiple collections, so a given image would need to be uploaded and maintained in both a public and private collection (for example).
  2. written in PHP, introducing security concerns.

Unknown

  1. Metadata flexibility / customization

Adobe Bridge

Pro

  1. user friendly
  2. industry standard tool for managing and manipulating large photo collections
  3. can export subset to html "image gallery"
  4. can export metadata into "pseudo XML"

Con

  1. Requires dedicated "photo admin" to add images, manipulate metadata, create HTML site, etc.
  2. No integrated search functionality in html image gallery.

Unknown

  1. Does "xml" export contain link to image?
