Ecartis Mailing List Manager

Ecartis is the mailing list manager in use at LNS. This page provides a summary of common user interactions with Ecartis; another page documents the adminstrative interface.

All commands are executed by sending mail to ecartis@mail.lns.cornell.edu. Commands can appear on the subject line or in the message body, but not both--if there is a valid command on the subject line, the body is ignored.

Basic Commands

In the table below, the examples are mailto links that send the command to our list server.
Command Description Example
help Sends the ecartis help file. help
lists Sends a list of the mailing lists. lists
subscribe list [user] Subscribe to a list subscribe testlist
unsubscribe list [user] Unsubscribe from a list unsubscribe testlist

who list Shows the membership of a list. who testlist
which Shows the lists you are subscribed to. which

Notes

 • See the help file for information on digests, hiding your subscription, and going on "vacation".
 • Most commands that change your subscription status will send a message requesting confirmation; replying to that message quoting the body will confirm the action.
 • Most subscriptions and posts to some lists require the approval of the list owner.
 • To send a message to the list, send mail to mailto:testlist@mail.lns.cornell.edu?subject=test listname@mail.lns.cornell.edu.
 • If an unsubscribe request is refused, you may be subscribed at a different address. In that case, use the who command to list the membership of the list, find the email address of yours subscribed, and use the the "unsubscribe list user" form of the unsubscribe command, where user is the subscribed email address. The confirmation request will be sent to the subscribed address.
