FAQ:

How can I change the screen resolution of my Linux machine?

ANSWER:

There are two ways to edit your screen settings from the main menu bar.
  1. Application->Preferences->Screen_Resolution
  2. Application->System Settings->Display

If your desired screen resolution is not available, the system is probably not configured correctly for your monitor. To fix this, you will need to use the second Display menu (Application->System Settings->Display) and click on the "Hardware" tab to select the correct monitor. Generally, "Generic CRT Display" (or LCD, as the case may be) works well.
