Printing from a Windows 2000 Laptop


This Page provides instructions for adding a networked printer to a portable computer running Windows 2000.

Part 1 – Adding LPR support to Win2K

  1. Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs
  2. Select Add/Remove Windows Components from left panel
  3. Scroll down the list of components. If Other Network File and Print Services is not checked, check it and click Next. If Other Network File and Print Services is checked, click Cancel.
  4. Close Add/Remove Programs.

Part 2 – Installing the printer

  1. Go to Start - Settings - Printers - Add Printer.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Select Local printer, and click Next.
  4. Select Create a New Port, select LPR Port from the Drop Down Menu, and click Next.
  5. In the Name or address of server providing lpd field, enter lns61.lns.cornell.edu.
    In the Name of printer or print queue field, enter W374_XRX_3450
  6. Click Ok.
  7. Click on Have Disk, Browse. Click on the dropdown next to Look in: and select New Folder which should be near the bottom of the dropdown.
  8. Click Open, then Ok.
  9. Enter a printer name, choose whether or not this will be your default printer, and click Next.
  10. Select Do not share this printer, and click Next.
  11. Choose whether or not to print a test page, and click Next.
  12. Click Finish.
To print, select the printer name you entered in step 9.
