Printing from a Windows XP laptop

Installing LPR Print Services

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  4. In the Windows Components Wizard, check Other Network File and Print Services, and then click Next.
  5. Click Next, and then click Finish.
    Note: You may be prompted for the Windows XP Professional CD to complete the installation.

To add an LPR printer

  1. In Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
  2. Under Printer Tasks, click Add a printer to open the Add Printer Wizard, and then click Next.
  3. Click Local printer or stand-alone network printer, clear the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box, and then click Next.
  4. Click Create a new port, and then click LPR Port.
  5. If LPR Port is not available, click Cancel to stop the wizard. To add the LPR port, you need to install the optional networking component, Print Services for UNIX, as explained earlier in this article.
  6. Click Next, and then provide the following information:
    • In Name or address of server providing LPD, type lns61.lns.cornell.edu
    • In Name of printer or print queue on that server, type W374_XRX_3450.
    • Click OK.
  7. Click on Have Disk, Browse. Click on the dropdown next to Look in: and select New Folder which should be near the bottom of the dropdown.
  8. Click Open, then Ok and Ok again.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Enter a name for the printer you are adding. Make sure the No radio button is selected. Click Next.
  11. Make sure the Do not share this printer radio button is selected.
  12. Now try and print a test page to see if this worked.
    Click Next.
  13. Click Finish.
  14. You should now be able to print by selecting the printer name you entered in step 10.
