CLASSE Windows Managed Computers Firefox update April 13th, 2015

This will update Firefox to ESR 31.6.0 during our normal Windows update period.

Setting your default printer

Quite a few misdirected printouts have been appearing on the printer used by the CLASSE computer group, some of them of a private nature.

To avoid sending your print job to a printer you did not want to send to, please set your default printer on your main computer.

For Windows:
  • click on 'start'
  • click on 'devices and printers'
  • find your closest printer in the list
  • right mouse click on the printer and choose 'set as default printer'

Linux user and Home Directories are CLASSE readable

In response to some recent inquiries, we would like to point out that, unlike on Windows, personal Linux directories (/home/username and \\samba\home\username, /nfs/user and \\samba\user\username, etc.) are "world readable" by default. That is, anyone with a CLASSE account can read content in those directories unless you change the permissions on Linux yourself. For instructions on changing permissions, please see Permissions.

Outlook's AutoDiscover Service popups: Don't Ask Me

For the past week or two, Outlook 2010 (or 2013) has been failing to connect and going into "offline mode" instead. Affected users see a prompt asking for permission to update their client using https://autodiscover.exchange.cornell.edu. CIT's recommended action is to check the "don't ask me" checkbox and click Allow, Outlook will then connect correctly.

CIT determined that this prompt was expected behavior from Microsoft. It happens when the AutoDiscover Service looks up a user account in the on-premise directory and is then redirected to the correct location in Office 365. CIT is continuing to investigate the issue, and a history of this incident is available at http://www.it.cornell.edu/services/alert.cfm?id=3691.



General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
