Firefox update on LEPP Windows computers to 10.0.7

During the night of Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning, September 4th and 5th, Firefox will be updated to 10.0.7, Flash will be updated to 11.4.402.265 and Java to 6.0.35. The Java update fixes a security defect which has been in the news recently.

  • After the update Firefox will ask you to enable the Java Plugin. Please check the box to allow this.

PC50 (legacy LNSNTCAD Z: drive) switching to READ-ONLY

On September 10th, 2012 the legacy PC50 file server will be changed to READ-ONLY mode. We will do one last back up to tape and then turn off PC50 on September 17th, 2012. If you are still using the LNSNTCAD Z: Drive, please make sure you have been migrated to SAMBA before September 10th. You can check by going to \\samba\user\{yourusername} to make sure any Z drive files appear there.

If you find you cannot write to your Z drive after September 10th, it is because you HAVE NOT been migrated. Please open a service request so we can do the migration for you.

\\SAMBA will change to authenticate to CLASSE

In October, 2012, we plan to migrate the SAMBA file server to using CLASSE authentication . A specific date will be in our newsletter as we get closer. If you do not currently have a CLASSE account, please submit a service request for access.

Expected changes are as follows:
  • If you are using Windows XP on the LNSNTCAD domain, you will no longer be able to automatically access your network files. You will need to specify the CLASSE domain and password when accessing SAMBA.
    • You can request that we re-image or replace your PC with one running Windows 7 if you have a WBS to charge.
    • You can request that we move your XP computer over to the CLASSE domain. This causes some major changes:
      1. You will lose access to local files.
      2. You will get a a new, blank profile when this is done.
      3. You will need to copy files to a file share before the move to maintain access.
      4. The computer will no longer be backed up.
  • If you are using Windows 7, you will no longer be prompted for your LNSNTCAD username and password when accessing SAMBA.

Scientific Linux 4 and 32-bit

As they are no-longer supported or receiving updates, we have begun the process of shutting down or replacing SL4 systems (and earlier) wherever possible. All new Linux deployments are 64-bit SL6, so we are also inventorying and planning for the replacement of all 32-bit only systems. If you are aware of a 32-bit only or SL4 system that can be disposed of or needs to be upgraded, please email service-lepp@cornell.edu. One option for testing the version of Linux is to execute cat /etc/redhat-release.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
