VPN Upgrade March 3rd 10AM
The CLASSE VPN will have a 30 minute outage starting at 10AM for updates to the server. As part of this, clients will be updated on Managed Windows computers starting on March 3rd around 10AM.
Test non-CLASSE Networks: Red Rover, Eduroam, Home ISPs
One common question we get is about network performance to SAMBA from off our network. Remember that this includes Red Rover, Eduroam and your ISP at home. We have essentially no influence on networks we do not maintain ourselves, but we still need to determine if problems users are having are from the "commodity Internet" or from our server or network. One good test you can do is to measure the upload, download and ping times from the troublesome network.
- Speedtest.net - simple site to test your network. Steps:
- Type www.speedtest.net into your web browser.
- Allow Flash or Java to run, and click on 'Start Test'.
- Report the results in tickets to the CLASSE IT group.
It's important to realize that these results change minute by minute - so please test as close as possible to the time you have trouble. Doing a test a day later, or even an hour later, will not help us diagnose your problems.
CIT provides an assessment tool for RedRover or Eduroam at
https://ratemywifi.cit.cornell.edu/. You can submit as many times as you would like from any Cornell wifi location.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
