Today's topics:
RedRover wireless, VPN, SAMBA, and CLASSE login training
The "LNS Protected" wireless network has been shut down in Wilson Lab. Use RedRover wireless instead. "LNS Protected" wired networking will continue to be operational.
Bring your laptop to a hands-on training session in the Wilson Commons area at 1PM on Monday, January 14. You'll be shown how to register for RedRover access, and for CLASSE logins for use with SAMBA and the CLASSE VPN. The CLASSE VPN can be used so a computer connected to RedRover can have direct access to CHESS and LEPP printing, SAMBA and other services.
Note: All students get charged for their use of off-campus bandwidth (aka NUBB charges), so Lab-supplied devices should be registered for RedRover by staff or faculty.
Kronos Full blocked again. USE KRONOS BASIC
If you can use Kronos Basic (HTML) you will avoid these continual notices and issues with accessing Kronos.
Only Payreps are required to use the Kronos Full interface.
Try using the Basic interface before submitting service requests for Kronos issues.
Yet another Java security vulnerability has been found and is being exploited. When you try to run the Java version of Kronos, Firefox will complain
- This plugin has security vulnerabilities.
- Click here to activate the Java(TM) Platrom SE7 U plugin.
Click on that second line of text (e.g. on the word "Java") so Kronos will run.
Beware: Do
NOT activate the Java plugin for any off-campus Web sites. Many Web sites have been compromised and will use the Java security hole to trash your computer. Your computer may be unavailable for several days while it is being cleaned up.
LEPP Windows PCs removing Adobe Reader
As we wrote in a previous newsletter, the new PDF reading software, "PDF-X-Change Viewer" has been deployed to LEPP Windows PCs. During our standard Monday update, we will be uninstalling Adobe Reader from LEPP Windows computers. We are making this change to significantly improve security and reduce the administrative overhead of maintaining the Adobe Reader product. All standard PDF files can be viewed with "PDF-X-Change Viewer". This viewer has additional functionality not available in Adobe Reader like being able to fill out forms by "typing" on the PDF and saving it.
One effect of this change is that your copy of Firefox might not be configured to open PDFs in the local application. You can fix this as described here:
https://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/ConfigureFirefoxToOpenPDFsInApplication
Some users have Adobe Acrobat installed for specific job functions. Adobe Acrobat is not affected by this change.
Linux updates to SL6.3
All LEPP SL6 systems are being upgraded from SL6.2 to SL6.3 at approximately 4am Tuesday, 1/15. This is a minor bugfix release, and the upgrade should be transparent for most users. For the SL6.3 release notes and additional information on this upgrade, please see
http://www.scientificlinux.org/distributions/6x/63/ .
W229_xrx_7800_11X17 print queue
We have added an extra queue to the Wilson Xerox color printer for printing 11X17 prints (also called Tabloid). Please use this queue for all 11x17 printing.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
