CLASSE Managed Windows Firefox and Flash update March 23, 2015
We are updating Firefox and Flash for security patches during the standard update period today.
Print Server Upgrade
The main CLASSE print server used by Windows, Linux, and OS X will be updated in the early morning of Tuesday, April 7. The upgrade should be transparent and non-disruptive. However, please don't hesitate to submit a
ServiceRequest if you have any problems printing.
CLASSE Managed Workstations, including your desktop computer, are not backed up.
CLASSE Managed Workstations, including desktop computers and laptops running Windows, Linux or MacOSX, are
not backed up. This means that the files you save anywhere on your local computer are
not backed up. If your disk dies or your computer is stolen or lost, all of those files will be gone forever.
To compensate for this, CLASSE provides centralized networked filesystems which are highly available, regularly backed up, and protected against theft. Keep your files on them. On Windows and Mac computers, these filesystems can be accessed by way of samba.classe.cornell.edu.
If you'd like help or clarification, please contact any member of the CLASSE IT group or submit a
ServiceRequest.
Data Stewardship
Please see the CLASSE Wiki page
DataStewardship, which discusses some of your responsibilities in taking care of your files and data. In addition to the requirements imposed by our funding agencies, the University has its own policies. In particuar, see University Policy 4.12, Cornell's policy on Data Stewardship. It's available at
http://www.dfa.cornell.edu/treasurer/policyoffice/policies/volumes/governance/data.cfm
You must determine what sort of files you are a custodian of, and you must store and manage those files in accordance with the policy. To store the files appropriately, you must know where your files are.
For further information, please don't hesitate to contact any member of the CLASSE IT group.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
