SSL Certificate Update

The SSL certificates for imap.lepp.cornell.edu and smtp.lepp.cornell.edu have been updated. You may need to accept the new certificates in your mail browser. The new certificates will be good for three years.

New Xerox Color Printers

We have two new Xerox color printers, n123_xrx_7800 and w229_xrx_7800 (located in Newman #123 and Wilson #229). These two printers will be replacing the IBM color printers, n123_ibm_1567 and w229_ibm_1567. Please begin using these printers and give us feedback on any problems you experience with them. For the next month we will keep the two IBM's running (as long as we have supplies) alongside the Xerox printers to help in this transition. Please send any color printer problems to service-lepp@cornell.edu.

Reminder: User folder permissions on Samba (\\samba\user)

We have moved most users off of PC50 and onto SAMBA for their network user shares. SAMBA is where you should store non-project or non-group files you want to ensure are backed up. The following is an excerpt from our New Z Drive documentation that is given to every user before they are migrated. For more information please see: https://wiki.lepp.cornell.edu/lepp/bin/view/Computing/NewZDrive

  • The default permission for the new "Z Drive" is "Owner (you) Read and Write" and "Everyone Read" (Unix protections 755). This means that everyone who can log in at the lab, including outside collaborators or anyone with a LEPP account can read your files.
  • In addition, there is a "private" folder \\samba\user\username\private which is only readable and writable by the owner (username) of the directory (Unix protections 700). You must put files that should be private in the folder named "private".

Note: If you are confused by this, please contact service-lepp@cornell.edu. We will help you to make sure the file permissions have been set correctly.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
