Secured (encrypted) VNC Instructions

note that this is the required connection if you are outside of LEPP's network
  1. setup port forwarding
    • ssh -L 5900:pc570b:5900 lnx570.lepp.cornell.edu
  2. open a vnc viewer and connect to 127.0.0.1:5900 (or "localhost screen 0", depending on your viewer application)
    • From Linux
      • from a terminal, type the command `krdc`
        • Alternatively if you are running Gnome or KDE, you may be able to start krdc by clicking on the "start" menu (frequently a Red Hat or Gnome foot icon), select "Internet" and choose "Remote Desktop Connection".
      • In the "Remote Desktop Connection" window that appears, enter the following information:
        • "Remote desktop:" = 127.0.0.1:5900
        • "Connection type:" = "High Quality"
        • Click on "Connect"
        • Enter the vnc password ( "viewvnc" (without the quotes))
      • To send a "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" to the remote windows machine, press "Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Delete".
        • log on to the Windows machine with your LNSNTCAD account.

Simple (un-encrypted) VNC Instructions

  1. open a vnc viewer and connect to pc570b:5900 (or "pc570b screen 0", depending on your viewer application).
    • From Linux
      • start the vnc client by typing 'krdc' in a terminal
        • alternatively, click on the "Main Menu" icon and select "Internet" -> "More Internet Applications" -> "Remote Desktop Connection"
      • In the "Remote Desktop Connection" window that appears, enter the following information:
        • "Remote desktop:" = pc570b:5900
        • "Connection type:" = "High Quality"
        • Click on "Connect"
        • Enter the vnc password ( "viewvnc" (without the quotes))
      • To send a "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" to the remote windows machine, press "Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Delete".
        • log on to the Windows machine with your LNSNTCAD account.

Access without a Viewer Application

  1. Open a browser window.
  2. In the address bar, type pc570b:5800
    1. You can use b,c,d in place of a above for the machine you want to connect to.
  3. You may get a dialog box asking you to approve access for Java for Ultravnc.net - allow/approve this access.
  4. Enter the password "viewvnc" (without the quotes).
  5. To send Ctrl-Alt-Del to the windows machine, press the Send Ctrl-Alt-Del button.
  6. To disconnect, press the Disconnect button.

Obtaining a VNC Viewer on Windows

You may download the UltraVNC viewer from www.ultravnc.com by selecting to download "Ultr@VNC 1.0.2 Standalone Viewer" from the right hand list.
