Details of Network, Computer and Power Outages at Wilson Lab:

Tuesday, August 10, through Saturday, August 14, 2010.

Technicians will be performing scheduled maintenance on the switching gear for Wilson Lab's incoming power. Work will start shortly before 7AM through 3PM, every day, starting on Monday, August 9 through Saturday, August 14. Hopefully, computers will be unaffected by the work being done on Monday.

  • Most LEPP computers will be unusable starting at 6:30 AM on Tuesday, August 10.
    • Many, but not all, of the affected systems will be available again from Tuesday evening until 6:30AM Saturday morning.
  • All CLASSE computers (both LEPP and CHESS) will be unavailable starting at 6:30 AM on Saturday, August 14
    • Only critical infrastructure systems are likely to be up before Monday, August 16.

What should you do?

  • End all of your editing sessions and logout before going home every day.
    • Unintentional power glitches may take down desktop and server systems before you return.
  • If you edit any important files, be sure to make copies elsewhere, just in case there are computer system or disk failures.
  • People with laptops who will be on campus Saturday and who need network access should use Cornell's Red Rover service.
  • There is no need for you to turn off any systems.
    • LEPP and CHESS computer group staff will be shutting systems down as needed.
  • Make sure that all batch jobs, including those running on the compute farms in the LEPP trailer, will complete before 5:00 AM Tuesday morning, August 10.

How will this affect you?

  • Most desktop systems will have problems on Tuesday. This includes Windows, Macs and Unix (Linux, Solaris and Tru64) systems. They'll have many different problems because various license and application servers will be down.
  • No computers will work on Saturday.

  • Things we expect will NOT work on both Tuesday and Saturday
    • Many licensed software packages will refuse to run. Their license servers are in the LEPP trailer, which will be without power.
    • Replicon
    • Microwave Studio
    • Autodesk Vault
    • Ansys
    • Some installations of Matlab (some use a license sever, some have standalone licenses)
    • Printers (their spooling computer will be down)
    • Linux, Windows and Macintosh Backup services (the Backup servers are in the LEPP trailer)
    • Macintosh file services
    • Linux and Solaris compute farms
    • CLEO calibration constants
    • Sol105 (the Unix/Linux home disk server) is in LT107: it will be down starting at 6:30 AM on Tuesday.
      • It will be up on Saturday, but unreachable.
    • \\samba\home (the new Windows home disk server used by only a few people) is in LT107: it will be down starting at 6:30 AM on Tuesday.
      • It will be up on Saturday, but unreachable.

  • The LEPP Linux batch queues will be suspended as of Friday evening, August 6, so that running jobs will finish before Tuesday morning. We hope they will be operational again Tuesday evening.
    • Although they'll be unreachable on Saturday, we expect that the LEPP Linux batch queues will continue to run through Saturday's power outage, which affects the main building but not the LEPP trailer.

  • The Feynman cluster will be down Tuesday through Saturday due to limited cooling in Wilson 221, Other computers in W221 may have to be shut down, too.

  • Things that probably will work on Tuesday, but NOT on Saturday
    • Network connection to and from Cornell or the rest of the world
      • This includes Newman Lab, since it connects by way of Wilson Lab.
    • Videoconferencing
    • CESR and ERL control systems
    • Cornell's centralized services
      • Example: Colts time reporting
    • Software packages which do not require license servers
      • Example: Microsoft Office
    • PC50 (the old Windows home disk server, still used by many people) is in W221: it will be up on Tuesday.
      • It will be down starting at 6:30 AM on Saturday.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the LEPP or CHESS computer groups or send e'mail to service-lepp@cornell.edu

Background: when each power circuit will be off.

Power is scheduled be off to various distribution circuits as below, starting just before 7AM each day. Power should be restored by about 3PM each day. Inadvertent power outages may also happen.

  • Monday, August 9: US-5 and US-6 -- CESR and RF systems
  • Tuesday, August 10: US-2 -- elevators, CLEO and LEPP modules, LS4 pumps (i.e. no power to compute and file servers in LT107)
    • W221's Liebert air conditioner will be off (very limited cooling)
  • Wednesday, August 11: US-3 -- CESR, ERL, Cryo, Cooling towers (i.e. limited or no cooling in Wilson computer room)
    • W221's Liebert air conditioner will be off (very limited cooling)
  • Thursday, August 12: US-4 -- Synch magnets
  • Friday, August 13: rain makeup date for power; Campus chilled water will be off. (i.e. limited cooling in Wilson computer room)
  • Saturday, August 14: US-1 -- general building and CHESS module (i.e. no power to CLASSE networks and computer infrastructure)
    • The entire network will be down starting at 6:30 AM on Saturday. There will be no connection to or from the outside world for any system in Newman, Wilson or the trailers until after 3PM.
    • Saturday's outage includes the CESR and ERL control systems plus central servers like LNS101, PC50, and Wiki and Web servers.
    • Only "critical" systems will be brought up Saturday evening. Many computer systems will stay down until some time during the day on Monday
  • If necessary due to weather, Saturday's outage might be postponed until Sunday.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the LEPP or CHESS computer groups or send e'mail to service-lepp@cornell.edu
