VNC VPN Instructions

  • VNC = Virtual Network Computing (provides access to the screen of a remote computer)
  • VPN = Virtual Private Network (provides private access to a remote network by way of some other network)

Set up VNC Server on a desired Public Linux computer

  1. Connect to the CLASSE VPN.
  2. Follow the instructions for connecting to Linux from Windows with XMing / PuTTY.
  3. Run the Linux program vncserver as described by the Remote Linux instructions here. Remember to NOTE THE SCREEN NUMBER shown by vncserver.
  4. To provide access from a personally owned computer, we suggest installing TigerVNC's vncviewer as it is cross platform. Alternatively, for Windows, you can run the vncviewer program available here: vncviewer.exe. It does not need any installation, you just run it.
  5. To connect from a local (client) computer to a remote (server) computer, follow the VNC instructions here.
