X Windows for Home PCs
Frequently, LEPP users want to use Exceed from their homes to run x-sessions on LEPP machines. However, because the license for Exceed is very expensive, we encourage the use of two free X Servers; XMing or Cygwin and Xorg, a free X Window System. The choice will depend on whether you want/need specific Mathematica fonts as well as a Posix system on Windows, or if you only need an X Server. Most users are well served by XMing.
XMing is available from:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xming . Install as a normal windows application, and get our XMing script from here:
RunXMing.exe
Follow the standard instructions here:

Warning:
Cygwin/X is no longer supported at LEPP.
The information below is retained only for historical reasons.
You can install the latest version of cygwin with X from the internet. Please see
Installing Cygwin from the Net for (possibly outdated) instructions.
If installing over the net is not an option, it is also possible for us to create a Cygwin/X installation CD for you to take home. Please send an email to
service@lepp.cornell.edu requesting such a CD. Please be prepared for a possible delay in creating this CD. Cygwin is constantly being changed and updated, and with our limited resources, creating a new CD will usually be a somewhat low-priority request. For instructions, see
Installing Cygwin via CD.
For instructions on using Xorg from cygwin to start X sessions, please see
Xorg.
MATHEMATICA
If you would like to remotely run Mathematica using Cygwin, you must place the Mathematica fonts in the correct location on your local PC
- Download mathematica-fonts.zip.
- unzip mathematica-fonts.zip onto your local disk.
- Place the contents of the unzipped folder in C:/cygwin/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ so you end up with C:/cygwin/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/AFM/, C:/cygwin/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/X/, etc.
- Start X from Cygwin, connect to the remote machine that has mathematica, and enjoy!
