Today's topics:

The main CLASSE print server used by Windows, Linux, and OS X will be updated in the early morning of Tuesday, April 7. The upgrade should be transparent and non-disruptive. However, please don't hesitate to submit a ServiceRequest if you have any problems printing. Please see PrintingAtCLASSE for more on printing at CLASSE.

Compromises of User-Managed Systems

In the past month, there have been several incidents where user-managed lab computers (i.e. systems that are not CLASSE-managed) have become infected with viruses or malware. If you have a user-managed system, please make sure your anti-virus software is up to date (submit a ServiceRequest if you are unsure how to check). If you would like to discuss switching from a user-managed system to a CLASSE-managed system, please submit a ServiceRequest.

User-Managed Systems are not backed up

As a side effect of the system compromises, we have discovered that many people are not properly backing up their files.

Just as with CLASSE-managed systems (discussed in last week's newsletter, q.v.), user-managed computers are not backed up. If you manage your desktop or laptop computer, you have the responsibility for making sure that the files you create are properly backed up to CLASSE's central file systems. Your personal Data Stewardship responsibilities are spelled out by funding agencies and by Cornell. For more information, including appropriate backup locations, please see the CLASSE DataStewardship document. If you need help in devising a backup strategy, please contact the CLASSE IT group.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
