ID2A: Photon-In Photon-Out X-ray Spectroscopy (PIPOXS)

The PIPOXS beamline is optimized for studying the geometric and valence electronic structures of catalytic systems and functional material using x-ray spectroscopic methods. Primary methods employed here are x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS, both transmission and fluorescence), x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), high energy resolution fluorescence detected XAS (HERFD XAS), and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering / resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RIXS / RXES). Incident energies from 4 - 58 keV can be provided via Si(111) and Si(311) monochromators (4 - 30 keV and 7 - 58 keV, respectively) in beam spots ranging from 1 (v) x 2 (h) mm down to 100 (v) x 400 (h) μm. A variety of spectrometers, sample environments, and detectors are available.

Methods Available

PIPOXS offers a flexible endstation that can accommodate a variety of different x-ray spectroscopic experiments. Conventional x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and EXAFS are available in both transmission and fluorescence mode (four-element Vortex SDD). X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), high energy resolution fluorescence detected (HERFD) XAS, and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) are also available using the DAVES spectrometer and our library of Analyzer Crystals, which determine which elements / emission lines are accessible. A dispersive XES spectrometer is undergoing commissioning and may be available for pilot experiments for experienced user groups.

All of these experimental methods are available for in-person, mail-in, and remote beamline operation; remote control of the station computer provided via NoMachine provided the users have completed the required safety trainings in the User Database. The types of samples that can be accommodated for remote experiments are more limited than for in-person measurements, so please contact the contact the beamline scientist prior to requesting remote or mail-in beamtime.
