2023: The Year in Review

Happy holidays from CLASSE-IT! 2023 was another busy year filled with constant IT changes resulting from space modifications in Wilson Lab and the construction of Wilson West. In the midst of this activity, we also met two major milestones: upgrading our external network connections and rolling out a new CHESS user dashboard called BeamPASS (which required expanding our application programming team). We have also begun to plan a comprehensive revamping of our central data storage systems, which will provide improved resilience against hardware failures.

Some notable statistics from the past year:
  • 2,900 new ServiceRequest tickets submitted by over 470 different users, generating nearly 24,000 emails.
  • 130,000 jobs submitted to the CLASSE Compute Farm, consuming 80 CPU years of computer time.
  • 80,000 pages sent to our printers.
  • 300 TB of raw data collected by CHESS users.
  • Nearly 70 new desktop and laptop computers deployed (not counting servers).
  • Approximately 140 GitLab projects updated (out of 300 total) by CLASSE users.

Next year, we look forward to introducing new improvements to networking and security, upgrading our Linux operating system, and commissioning IT services in Wilson West. Throughout our work, we have relied on the support of our colleagues across CLASSE, and we are grateful for everyone's help. We wish all of you a restful winter break, and see you in 2024!
