Core CLASSE network disruption Tuesday, February 14th, starting at 10AM

We will be updating and restarting a core 1Gbit CLASSE switch at 10AM. This will cause general network glitches for many CLASSE Public, Protected, and other connections to desktops and laptops. We hope to complete the work within 1 hour, but it may take up to 4 hours in the worst case.

Web server restarts on Tuesday, February 14 @ 10 AM

At approximately 10am Tuesday, the main CLASSE, CHESS, CBB, and Xraise websites will be rebooted, as will the CLASSE wiki, SVN, and ELOG servers. Each site should only be down for a few seconds.

Reminder: desktop and laptop computers are not backed up

Please keep important files in an appropriate, backed up CLASSE Samba directory. The CLASSE computer that you sit in front of is not backed up. If you store important files on its Desktop or in its Documents folders, they can easily be lost forever. Unfortunately, people have lost many days of work because they accidentally deleted the wrong Desktop folder. In contrast, if you accidentally delete a backed-up Samba folder it can be recovered easily.

A shortcut folder can be created on your computer's Desktop which actually uses a folder on Samba. Please don't hesitate to contact the CLASSE IT group if you'd like help creating one. More information is available at https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/DataStewardship

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
