CLASSE Network Outage Tuesday, February 20th, 2018

CLASSE IT is planning an upgrade to our central Firewall system at 10am. This will interrupt many CLASSE networks and access to the outside Internet. The main interruption should be complete by 11AM, with potential unanticipated side effects resolved during that day. We also have a rollback plan in place if necessary.

Please email service-classe@cornell.edu with any questions or concerns, and consider subscribing to the classe-it-news-l mailing list for additional announcements and information.

CLASSE Managed Windows Computers - Lenovo System Update

CLASSE packages the Lenovo System Update with our CLASSE installed Base Image on Windows computers. This program may pop up to request you update the firmware on your computer. This is a legitimate tool, and you should feel free to install the firmware updates it offers.

Flash on Scientific Linux 7 (SL7)

The patched Adobe Flash web browser plugin has been pushed to all CLASSE SL7 workstations. Adobe Flash is now part of the standard package set on SL7.

Wilson and PSB Public Terminal room CLASSE Linux systems upgraded to SL7.

In continuing our migration to SL7, all CLASSE Linux systems in Wilson-315 and PSB-361 have been upgraded to SL7. To set the Window Manager (GNOME3/GNOME Classic, icewm, Xfce, etc), please see:

Second Open Request for Linux users to Upgrade to SL7

Again, We would like to invite all CLASSE Linux users to upgrade to SL7. If you are interested, please email service-classe@cornell.edu to schedule a time.

Please see ScientificLinux7 for introductory documentation on SL7.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
