Network Maintenance - 10am Tuesday

On Tuesday January 10 at 10am, we will restart several infrastructure services that may result in brief pauses in network connectivity. In particular, the caching proxy server, /nfs/opt file system, and grid engine queuing system will be restarted.

CHESS DAQ Rotation - 10am Tuesday

On Tuesday January 10 at 10am, we will rotate the main CHESS DAQ and MAIA filesystems and prepare them for the 2017-1 run. During this time, access to these filesystems through NFS or Samba may hang. A followup will be sent when the rotation is complete.

At this time, the 2016-2 data will be removed from disk. Data can be kept on disk or restored at any time through an email to service-classe@cornell.edu.

CLASSE Managed Windows screen capture utility update

CLASSE Managed systems provide some small utilities when they are better than built in tools or provide useful functionality. One of those tools has been a screen capture and quick edit tool to enable easy creation of wiki screen shots or other uses for CLASSE employees. If you haven't used ZScreen, this is just a notice of a new tool ShareX. There will be a new desktop icon, ShareX after this week's standard updates.

We are updating CLASSE Managed Windows computers from the now somewhat ancient ZScreen software to the latest successor ShareX. Because this is not an in place upgrade (ShareX has to be installed and ZScreen removed), it is possible for users to lose settings, and the default directories used for screen captures and the like will change slightly. These all will still be in your user profile, and you will not lose any files. We will be leaving ZScreen on CLASSE Managed computers for a week to enable you to copy over any settings to ShareX, and then sometime before the end of January will remove ZScreen to complete the upgrade. Please open a service ticket if you have any questions.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
