Retirements: Selden Ball and Rich Sholtys
At the end of January, we bid a fond farewell to two longtime members of the CLASSE-IT team: Rich Sholtys and Selden Ball. Rich has worked at CLASSE for 29 years and has played critical roles in building our networking and our Windows infrastructure. Selden joined the CLASSE-IT group in 1974 (having previously worked as a research assistant) and has worn many hats over the years, most notably VMS and Tru64 system administrator, CESR control cluster architect, and security expert. Selden and Rich have made innumerable contributions to the success of the lab. We will miss their boundless expertise, gentle wisdom, and good humor.

As always, you can request to have data left on disk or restored by emailing

At this time, we will also be installing approximately 100TB to significantly increase the capacity of the CHESS DAQ. The filesystems may remain unavailable for most of the day, and updates will be sent to the chess-daqadmin-l mailing list when it is complete.
Firefox Update
Windows and Linux versions of Firefox will be updated Monday night to v52.5.2 to provide the most recent security patches.
SL7 Kernel Update
If your desktop computer is running Scientific Linux v7, please reboot your computer to pick up the most recent security patches in the kernel.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
