Central virtual machine maintenance - Wednesday 5-Jul-2017

From approximately 10 - 10:30am, the following central virtual machines will be rebooted.

lnx105 (cups print server), lnx99 (globus), ms3, ossec, pc102 (winapp), pc147, sr3 (stockroom), userdb (CHESS User Database), userdbtest

User disk quota has been increased to 5GB

The central CLASSE user disk (/nfs/user/username, or \\samba\user\username) is an area for all CLASSE users to store their personal files. Most files related to a specific project or group, especially if the files will be used by others, should be stored in file systems specific to that project or group, not in the user disk area. Please see UserDisk for more information on the user disk, and DataStewardship for more on data storage in general at CLASSE.

Redirecting scratch space from CLASSE Linux home directories

In an effort to avoid filling your Linux home disk quota with scratch files, Linux login scripts will be put in place on Wednesday, 5-Jul-2017, to move scratch space out of your home disk. In addition, this helps save CLASSE resources and avoid unnecessarily backing up scratch space.

If you've already moved these directories, they won't be moved again. However if they aren't already links, ~/.mozilla, ~/.thunderbird, ~/Downloads, and ~/.cache will be moved as follows :
  • ~/.mozilla/ and ~/.thunderbird/ to /nfs/user/$USER/
  • ~/Downloads/ and ~/.cache/ to /cdat/tem/$USER/

These changes will take affect when you login to a graphical desktop, and should be transparent to new and existing sessions.

For more information on your CLASSE Home Disk, including appropriate usage and an explanation of our quota setup, please see HomeDisk .

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
