Upcoming Change: Windows Firewall
During the spring down of April 2020, we will begin enabling the ESET firewall on CLASSE-managed Windows computers, replacing the current Windows Firewall. This host-based firewall will supplement the protection provided by the main CLASSE firewall at the perimeter of our network. This change also addresses some persistent issues we have encountered with the Windows Firewall (incorrect network detection and warning notices). Although the firewall transition is expected to be transparent to users, it is possible that some computers (especially laptops on isolated networks for hardware control) may experience some networking disruptions. Please submit a
ServiceRequest with any questions or concerns.
Remove Windows 7 on LNS Protected and CHESS Public
If you have a personal Windows 7 laptop connected to the LNS Protected or CHESS Public networks, please remove it immediately. Microsoft discontinued Windows 7 support on 14-Jan-2020, so all Windows 7 computers are highly vulnerable to compromise and are
no longer allowed on any CLASSE network. Any unauthorized Windows 7 computer detected on a CLASSE network will be disconnected.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
