CLASSE ELOG Authentication

On Tuesday 5/17, the CLASSE ELOG authentication system will change slightly. You will still login using your CLASSE username and password, and anyone who has already logged in will not need to do anything different. However, you will now login to an ELOG login screen rather than a window that pops up in your web browser. For more on ELOG Authentication, please see ClasseElog .

This change is required to support an email to ELOG gateway that will allow posting of and replying to entries using email. The CLASSE IT group is currently developing this gateway, and will make an announcement when it is ready for use.

This week's updates on CLASSE-managed Windows computers

  • 7zip will be updated to v16. This is a critical security fix, and a reboot is required. If your computer does not reboot for some reason, your Start Menu may disappear. If this happens, use CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot your computer.
  • New capability: We are adding the VLC media player to our standard software configuration. This software allows you to play many local media file types.

Modified update/reboot procedure for CLASSE-managed Windows computers

To improve our compliance with the Cornell University Policy on Information Security, we have changed the way in which third-party software is handled in our weekly updates on CLASSE-managed Windows computers. As a result, third-party software updates may now trigger an additional computer reboot during the weekly update period, which begins Tuesdays at 2:00 AM.

More details on weekly updates and reboots, including special considerations for laptops and third-party software, can be found at SystemExpectations.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
